about the movie

The Story of Twinkle Lee

Twinkle Lee (Kyle Toy), a working L.A. dancer-turned-choreographer, is called back to his childhood home in Langley, British Columbia, when his father, Ming (Tzi Ma), is diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer. Their relationship is strained due to Ming’s past rejection of Twinkle’s sexuality and passion for dance. As Twinkle returns, he navigates both his father’s illness and his own unresolved emotions.

To keep busy, Twinkle takes a teaching position at a local community center, where he meets a group of students, each with their own struggles. Among them is Angel, a 17-year-old transgender girl searching for her identity. Their teacher-student relationship grows as Twinkle helps Angel embrace her true self through dance. However, Angel’s father, Hassan, disapproves, leading to conflict.

Meanwhile, Twinkle rekindles old friendships, including with Gloria, his high school best friend, who encourages him to stay in town longer. He also has a brief romance with Angel, initially unaware of her age, leading to personal conflict over boundaries and responsibility.

As Ming’s condition worsens, he and Twinkle share vulnerable moments, with Ming revealing that he, too, once loved ballet but abandoned it out of fear. He eventually accepts his son for who he is. The father and son mend their relationship before Ming peacefully chooses hospice care.

The story culminates in a dance showcase organized by Twinkle and his students, symbolizing self-acceptance, resilience, and the power of dance to heal and transform.
